Nature's handiwork along an area of Florida's northeast coast, has left such a large collection of coquina rock formations that the locals refer to the area as ''Boulder Beach.'' Officially, the area is the Washington Oaks State Park, and is the largest protected concentration of coquina rock formations in the world.. What is coquina rock? Think of the beach. Imagine a sandy shoreline covered with shells. The sun bakes down; rain falls and endless waves pound the shoreline. All this thrashing and crashing of water upon sand eventually causes seashells to break into small pieces. When it rains, acid in rainfall further erodes the shell composition, leaching essential minerals such as calcium carbonate, or lime, into the sandy quartz granules. Over time, as the lime interacts with the quartz, the two solids merge into a sedimentary mass called coquina rock.
