I was drawn to this dahlia by its beautiful wine highlights. I captured this dahlia in Pittsburg, PA in late summer. It even has a hint of yellow. Dahlias are a vast group of annuals and perennials. Flowers come in virtually any colour except true blue and in a variety of different forms. Dwarf varieties are used as annual bedding, larger types are used in the perennial border or as dot plants in containers.
Dahlias require a fertile soil in full sun. In frost free areas the can be left outdoors all year round, otherwise the tubers can be dug up at the first sign of frost, stored dry over winter and replanted the following spring.
Most border varieties will require staking and all types will require regular dead heading.
